Generic "Lipitor" is a member of the drug class known as statins, used for lowering cholesterol. Generic "Lipitor" inhibits the rate-determining enzyme located in hepatic tissue that produces mevalonate, a small molecule used in the synthesis of cholesterol, co-enzymeQ10 and other mevalonate derivatives. This lowers the amount of cholesterol produced which in turn lowers the total amount of LDL cholesterol.

Generic "Lipitor" is indicated as an adjunct to diet for the treatment of dyslipidaemia, specifically hypercholesterolaemia. It has also been used in the treatment of combined hyperlipidemia. Generic "Lipitor" is used to reduce the amounts of LDL (bad) cholesterol, total cholesterol, triglycerides (another type of fat), and apolipoprotein B (a protein needed to make cholesterol) in your blood. Generic "Lipitor" is also used to increase the level of HDL (good) cholesterol in your blood. These actions are important in reducing the risk of hardening of the arteries, which can lead to heart attacks, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease.

How should I take Generic "Lipitor"

Take Generic "Lipitor" exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you. Take each dose with a full glass of water. Generic "Lipitor" is usually taken once a day with or without food. Try to take your dose at the same time each day. You may not be able to take Generic "Lipitor", or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment if you have any of the conditions listed above. Generic "Lipitor" is in the FDA pregnancy category X. This means that Generic "Lipitor" is known to cause birth defects if it is taken during pregnancy.   • decreased urine or rust-colored urine; or
  • blurred vision.
    Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take Generic "Lipitor" and talk to your doctor if you experience
  • headache;
  • upset stomach or flatulence; or
  • a rash.
Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.

What other drugs can INTERACT with Generic "Glucotrol XL"?

    If you take Generic "Lipitor" with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Generic "Lipitor" with any of the following:
  • Antacids such as Maalox TC Suspension
  • Clofibrate (Atromid-S)
  • Colestipol (Colestid)
  • Cyclosporine (Sandimmune, Neoral)
  • Digoxin (Lanoxin)
  • Drugs that suppress the immune system
  • Erythromycin (E.E.S., Erythrocin, others)
  • Fenofibrate (Tricor)
  • Fluconazole (Diflucan)
  • Gemfibrozil (Lopid)
  • Itraconazole (Sporanox)
  • Ketoconazole (Nizoral)
  • Oral contraceptives
Clinical studies show that grapefruit juice has a moderate interaction with Generic "Lipitor". Patients are recommended to avoid consumption of grapefruit juice while being treated with Generic "Lipitor".
